Reflections on the China Conference on Photobiology 2026: CIE Division 6 in a Rapidly Evolving Field

Article by: Dr. Wei Zhang, Director of CIE Division 6 – Photobiology and Photochemistry

The China Conference on Photobiology, held in May 2026, offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on the rapid and multidimensional evolution of this field. The conference programme connected fundamental research in neuroscience and immunology with advanced applications in medicine and public health, illustrating the expanding scope and deepening complexity that now define photobiology. This is the reality that CIE Division 6: Photobiology and Photochemistry must serve.

For CIE Division 6, this expansion presents a dual challenge. Scientifically, it demands that standards and metrics evolve beyond describing light to quantifying its mechanism-specific biological efficacy. Structurally, it reveals a gap: the vibrant, interdisciplinary research community driving this progress remains largely disconnected from the consensus-building processes of international standardisation.

Therefore, Division 6’s strategic focus must be on integration. Its path forward is to act as an essential bridge, translating frontier science into robust frameworks and transforming global research energy into collaborative, standardised practice. As photobiology continues to grow in scientific and practical importance, the goal is to ensure that, as the field becomes more complex, the foundational work of CIE becomes more, not less, central to its progress.

As an international scientific and standardising organisation, the CIE’s National Committees serve as focal points within individual countries. We encourage engagement between local experts and their National Committees, whose contact details are available on the CIE website here. Experts interested in contributing to the CIE’s work in this area are encouraged to contact CIE Division 6 directly. Dr. Wei Zhang, Director of CIE Division 6, can be reached at zhangwei@nltc.cn.
