The CIE plays a central role in turning scientific research into the foundations used in standards and professional practice worldwide. Through its technical reports, standards, models and guidance documents, the CIE provides internationally agreed knowledge that supports consistent practice, technological development and the creation of safe, effective and high-quality lighting solutions.
This work begins with the evaluation of research from academia, industry and professional institutions. CIE experts bring together the available evidence, assess its validity and limitations, and develop consensus-based guidance that can be applied in practice. In this way, the CIE helps bridge the gap between scientific progress and the requirements used by designers, manufacturers, regulators and other stakeholders.
The CIE is itself an international standardization body recognised by ISO and the IEC and works closely with both organisations. The CIE has an especially close relationship with ISO through its collaboration with ISO/TC 274, Light and Lighting, under a Partner Standards Developing Organisation agreement (PSDO). CIE publications form the basis for, and are directly referenced in, many international, regional and national standards. These include major European standards relating to workplace lighting and the measurement and presentation of photometric data for lamps, modules and luminaires.
