CIE GOVERNING BOARD AND TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT BOARD MEETINGS
The CIE Technical Management Board (TMB) met in Geneva, Switzerland, on 15 May 2026, followed by a joint meeting of the CIE Governing Board (GB) and Technical Management Board on 16 May 2026.
The meetings provided an important opportunity for CIE leadership to review ongoing technical and strategic activities, discuss current priorities across the organisation, and strengthen coordination between the governance and technical management of the CIE.
Topics included the progress of work across the CIE Divisions, future technical activities, standardisation matters, and wider strategic developments relevant to the international light and lighting community.
These meetings play an important role in ensuring that CIE’s scientific, technical, and standardisation work remains well coordinated and aligned with the needs of its members, National Committees, and international partners.
CIE STRENGTHENS STRATEGIC COOPERATION WITH ISO AND THE IEC
The CIE delegation held high-level meetings with the leadership of ISO and the IEC at their headquarters in Geneva in May. The discussions focused on the organisations’ strategic partnerships and standardisation activities. These meetings are of central importance to the CIE’s ongoing cooperation with ISO and the IEC and to the future development of these relationships.
The CIE is formally recognised by both ISO and the IEC as an international standardisation body and develops and publishes CIE standards covering a wide range of topics related to light and lighting. The CIE also maintains a close, formally agreed working relationship with ISO/TC 274, the ISO Technical Committee on Light and Lighting. This enables coordination of relevant work programmes through a Joint Advisory Group, with activities managed and carried out at varying levels of integration, ranging from informative exchanges to fully integrated joint working groups with co-chairs from both organisations. This arrangement enhances opportunities for the joint development of standards based on CIE technical input and helps raise the profile and understanding of the CIE within the international standards community.
As part of this ongoing cooperation, the CIE delegation attended the annual plenary meeting of ISO/TC 274, hosted by the Swiss Association for Standardisation (SNV) in Winterthur, Switzerland. During the meeting, the delegation presented current activities and developments across the CIE’s six scientific Divisions and actively contributed to technical discussions on topics of mutual interest. The CIE also delivered a workshop addressing recent advances in the complex field of obtrusive light, including the measurement of obtrusive light and light pollution, as well as the differing effects of artificial light on ecological systems and species.
Together, the high-level meetings with ISO and the IEC, along with the CIE’s participation in the ISO/TC 274 plenary, strengthened these strategic relationships and supported continued cooperation in international standardisation.
CIE DELEGATION VISITS CIE NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF SWITZERLAND
CIE was pleased to visit the Swiss Lighting Society, SLG, the CIE National Committee of Switzerland, in Olten on 18 May 2026 for a valuable exchange on lighting, education, and future challenges in the field.
The CIE delegation included Jennifer Veitch, CIE President; Diana Wernisch, CIE Secretary General; Tony Bergen, Vice President Technical and President-Elect; Nozomu Yoshizawa, Director of CIE Division 3; Luoxi Hao, Vice President Education; and Peter Blattner, Past President of the CIE. CIE would like to thank SLG President Ivo Huber and the SLG colleagues, Claudio Hartmann, Gino Gabriele, and Gregory Bartholdi, for the warm welcome and open discussions.
During the meeting, SLG presented its activities, structure, and current challenges. The exchange also addressed the national implementation of CIE activities in Switzerland and strategic topics such as digitalisation, sustainability, and light and health.
Visits to CIE National Committees provide an important opportunity to strengthen the connection between CIE’s international work and national lighting communities. CIE greatly values these exchanges, which support closer cooperation, shared understanding, and continued engagement across the global light and lighting community.
