CIE 2025 Keynote Lecture #2 - Recording Available with German Subtitles – Prof. Stephen Westland

The recording of the second CIE 2025 keynote lecture is now available!

As part of the CIE Project “Understanding Science – Understanding Light”, the keynote lectures from the CIE 2025 Scientific Conference (held from 7–9 July 2025 in Vienna) are being made publicly available—with German subtitles.

The German subtitles support the project’s aim to engage a broad audience in Vienna, Austria, making scientific topics around light more accessible to the local population.

Presenter: Prof. Stephen Westland (GB)Professor of Colour Science and Technology, School of Design at the University of Leeds
Talk title: Applications of Artificial Intelligence in the Colour Industries

About the Speaker: Stephen Westland is Professor of Colour Science and Technology at the University of Leeds, where he has also served as Head of School and Faculty Dean. Author of over 250 papers and several books, including Colour Science using MATLAB and Universal Principles of Color, he was President of the Society of Dyers and Colourists in 2019 and recipient of the Royal Photographic Society’s Davies Medal (2008). He has held editorial roles for key colour science journals and contributes to the AIC/ISSC Colour Literacy Project.

Talk Abstract: Since the introduction of the term Artificial Intelligence in 1956, the last 70 years had seen increasing sophistication and speed in machine-learning algorithms. This presentation reviewed key advances by describing several applications of AI in the colour-using industries. It covered applications using supervised and unsupervised machine learning, and discussed the possibility of software achieving artificial general intelligence and its potential impact on computational practice in colour, colorimetry, and colour imaging. The reasons for the current interest in AI were examined, and possible outcomes for the next 5–10 years were presented.
