Dear Colleagues,
I hope that you have all seen the First Announcement for the CIE Expert Symposium on Uncertainty Evaluation, which is to be held at the CIE Central Bureau in Vienna, Austria on 22 &endash; 24 January 2001. If you have not, please visit the CIE Division 2 website (http://physics.nist.gov/cie2) for further details.
The Symposium is split into a Tutorial Session, which will run from 09.00 on 22 January 2001 until 12.00 on 23 January 2001, and a Workshop Session, from 13.00 on 23 January until 12.30 on 24 January. Delegates may attend either Session, or both. The Tutorial Session will cover the fundamental theories and methods for uncertainty evaluation in general, together with recommendations and guidance on uncertainty evaluation for optical radiation measurements in an industrial or engineering environment. The Workshop Session will highlight recent developments in the assessment of uncertainties in complex situations, for example in the derivation of colour temperature from spectral irradiance, and is aimed primarily at those working at commercial calibration laboratories as well as national standardising laboratories.
The Programme incorporates a number of invited papers from key scientists and engineers working in this field, including representatives from PTB (Germany), CSIRO (Australia), Philips Lighting (The Netherlands), NPL (UK), NIST (USA) and BIPM.
In addition, some time is available for presentation of Contributed Papers. If you would like to present a paper, please send a short abstract, up to 1 page in length, to reach me by 1 December 2000 (sooner if possible). Authors will be notified whether their paper has been accepted for presentation by 8 December 2000. Presentations on the following topics will be especially welcome:
The Programme also includes ample opportunity for discussion, both within the formal sessions and during refreshment breaks. If you would like to make a brief (approximately 5 minute) presentation at one of the formal discussion sessions, please let me know by 30 December.
Finally, I apologise for the relatively short notice for this Symposium, but I hope that as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to attend what promises to be a very interesting meeting. A Provisional Programme will be published shortly and full details of the Final Programme will be published on the Division 2 website as soon as the decision on acceptance of Contributed Papers has been made. If you would like additional information before then, please contact me.
